Vamana is one of the five Pradhana Karmas of Panchakarma. Vamana karma means induction of emesis. This procedure involves the expulsion of doshas from the body through the mouth. Emesis therapy or Vamana Karma cleanses Kapha collected in the body and decongests the respiratory tract.
In the literal sense, Vamana Karma means to persuade the expelling of the contents of the stomach including Doshas that are vitiated orally. This is done for the purification of Urdhwa Bhaga or the upper part of the body.
In the Vamana therapy, Kapha and pitta doshas are brought to the stomach and duodenum from all over the body by the poorvakarma or pre-operative procedures and then eliminated by provoking the emesis. The detoxifying procedure should only be done after snehan (massage or oleation) and swedan (steam).
The Vamana therapy is effective for Kapha predominant diseases like IBD, rheumatism, bronchial asthma, rhinitis, allergic bronchitis, sinusitis, migraine, indigestion, fever, obesity, anorexia, diabetes mellitus, severe skin diseases (such as eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, Lichen Plannus), acne vulgaris, dyslipidemia, urticaria, filariasis, edema, epilepsy, various psychological disorders, PCOD, thyroid disorders, infertility, etc.
As per Ayurveda beliefs, seasonal changes influence the biological systems which result in the accumulation and aggravation of a particular dosha in a particular season. For instance, the accumulation and aggravation of Pitta dosha in Varsha Rutu or rainy season, Kapha dosha in Hemant rutu or winter season, and Vasant rutu or spring season.
