Urovasti is an Ayurvedic treatment used for the treatment of disorders caused by the imbalances caused by Vata dosha. The Sanskrit word Urovasti is made up of two words ‘Uro’ which means chest and ‘Vasti’ means to retain or contain something.
Urovasti is an oil-pooling treatment done to treat several conditions that affect the chest area, mostly lung and heart disorders.
During this procedure, a cabin or compartment made of black gram flour and water is constructed over the chest area. After which, warm medicated oil is poured into the cabin for a specific duration. Since the therapy mainly focuses on the rejuvenation and treatment of the heart, it is also called Hridvasti, where the word ‘Hrid’ means heart.
The oil used for Urovasti treatment must always be kept at a warm temperature for the procedure. The oil is constantly heated to retain its warmth.
The Urovasti treatment can be performed at any time of the day. If there is evidence of Kapha symptoms, the treatment is done in the morning. For Pitta symptoms, the therapy is done only in the afternoon. If the Vata symptoms are dominant, the treatment is done in the evening.
The individuals who come for Urovasti treatment are instructed to attend the treatment on an empty stomach to avoid unnecessary pressure on the stomach when the patient lies down on their back.
