About Shirodhara

The word Shirodhara is the combination of two Sanskrit words “Shiro” (head) and “Dhara” (flow). This Ayurvedic therapy is a holistic approach to providing relaxing, soothing, and calming effects on the body and mind. The therapy usually involves pouring liquid, usually oil, milk, buttermilk, or water onto your forehead from a specific height. The process allows the herbal oil to flow through the scalp and down into the hair. This classical and well-established ayurvedic procedure induces a relaxed state of mind relieving you from mental exhaustion. The therapy experiences the betterment of mind and body relieving anxiety, depression, and mental fatigue.

An experienced Ayurveda practitioner knows which liquid does well for the patient. Generally, sesame oil processed with various Ayurveda herbs is recommended for relaxing, soothing, and calming effects on the body and mind. Coconut oil, Ksheerabala oil, Mahanarayan oil, clarified butter (ghee), coconut water, animal milk, and buttermilk are also wise options to enhance the better experience for Shirodhara. Shirodhara may last around 30 to 90 minutes. The Ayurveda practitioner asks you to lie on your back and relax and your eyes may be covered with a barrier for protection. The warm oil that matches a person's body temperature allows it to gently flow through a small hole from the bottom of the bowl and falls between the eyebrows.
