About Agnikarma

Agnikarma is a thermal and slightly invasive procedure that induces pointed, controlled, and therapeutic burns over the regions that are painful or tender. 

Agnikarma is known as thermal micro-cautery. It has been mentioned in the classical Ayurvedic texts of Sushruta Samhita written by the Vedic surgeon Sushruta. He describes Agnikarma and its incredible effects on the treatment of the disorders of Sandhi (joint), Asthi (bone), and Snayu ( ligament). Whether the pain is chronic or acute, Agnikarma is beneficial for both. 

In Agnikarma treatment, the areas in your body with the most pain are identified and marked. After which a metallic object called Shalaka is used. The Shalaka is heated up and applied directly onto the marked areas of your body. 

According to Ayurvedic literature on Agnikarma, the pain caused by the effect of Vata on the Sandhi, Snayu, and Sira or veins. The Agnikarma treatment should be given in combination with oleation or Sneha therapy, Bandhana or bandaging, and Unmardana, which involves massaging, squeezing the body part or applying pressure. 

Although it is a rare practice today, it is a clinically established para-surgical treatment that can yield great results in pain management without any difficulties when done properly.
