Sinusitis

Sinusitis, also known as sinus infection or rhinosinusitis, is a common condition in which the paranasal sinuses become inflamed, resulting in a blocked nose, headache, and face discomfort. The paranasal sinuses are air cavities in the skull bones. On each side of the head, there are four pairs of sinuses. The maxillary, frontal, ethmoid, and sphenoid sinuses are the four. The sinuses are coated by mucus produced by the respiratory epithelium. Through tiny holes, mucus drains into the nasal cavity. Sinus inflammation has been associated with impaired sinus outflow.
When a sinus is blocked, fluid builds up, making it a favourable environment for bacteria or viruses to grow and cause infection. A typical sinusitis symptom is described as a dull pain or constant pressure commonly localized to the affected sinus. The pain may worsen when the person bends over or while lying down.
Symptoms frequently begin on one side of the head and extend to the other. Acute sinusitis may sometimes be accompanied by thick yellow-greenish nasal discharge. Sinusitis can be caused by allergy, infection and other conditions that cause blockage of sinus drainage.

Treatment in Ayurveda

Sinusitis is called pratishyayas in Ayurveda and is divided into four doshas: vataja pratishyaya, pittaja pratishyaya, kaphaja pratishyaya, and dusht pratishyaya. Treatments will be given in accordance with different pratishaya.

  • Ayurvedic therapy for sinusitis Nasya /nasal mucosal oleation is recommended if vataja pratishyaya is detected. It is done with hot herb-infused oil, which can reduce dryness caused by vata dosha.
  • Procedures using cold drugs are used in the diagnosis of pitta-type sinusitis. For patients suffering from pitta-type sinusitis, generic cold and fever medications might aggravate the problem.
  • Ayurvedic headache treatment for kaphaja sinusitis is similar to vataja pratishyaya but non-greasy.
  • Panchakarma Ayurvedic nose therapy is five-step detoxification for sinusitis.
