Paralysis

The inability to move a part of the body, whether temporary or permanent, is referred to as paralysis. In almost all cases, paralysis is caused by nerve damage rather than an injury to the affected area. For instance, even if the physical structures are healthy, damage in the middle or lower areas of the spinal cord is likely to affect function below the injury, such as the ability to move the feet or feel sensations. So what happens to the body when it is paralyzed depends on the cause of the paralysis, but generally at least one of the following factors is in play:

  • Because of brain damage, the brain is unable to send a signal to another part of the body.

  • The brain can detect touch and other bodily sensations but is unable to adequately communicate a response due to spinal cord damage.

  • Because of spinal cord damage, the brain cannot transmit or receive impulses to any part of the body.
