Preventing diseases from affecting your day-to-day lives
Obesity

Obesity is the formation of extra body fat that can have a negative impact on health and can eventually shorten your lifespan. It is caused by an energy imbalance. This imbalance typically results from a combination of events and decisions. Adults should be getting at least 2.5 hours of exercise each week and children's whole hours per day. Obesity may be largely responsible for the burden of diseases such as diabetes, ischemic heart disease, hypertension, ischemic stroke, osteoarthritis, and cancer.

If the energy input from the calories is greater than the energy output from physical activity, the body stores extra calories as fat. You need to store extra energy when you consume more than your body requires for its many functions. The majority of this storage takes the form of fat. Adipocytes, specialized cells that store fat, are found in adipose tissue. The majority of adipose tissue is located below the skin and around the intestines and other internal organs. Your body weight is increased and you seem larger because of the stored fat.
