Diabetes

Diabetes is a dangerous, lifelong condition characterised by an abnormally high blood glucose level. Type 1 and Type 2 are the two main types. There are some other rarer types of diabetes too. All types of diabetes lead patients to have an abnormally high level of glucose in their blood. But we all need glucose, it's what gives us energy. Our bodies produce glucose when they break down the carbohydrates we consume.
We also need glucose called insulin. It's made by our pancreas and its insulin that allows glucose in our blood to enter our cells and fuel our bodies. If you don't have diabetes your pancreas senses when glucose has entered your bloodstream and releases the right amount of insulin so that the glucose can get into your cells. However, if you have diabetes, this will be ineffective.
In Ayurveda, diabetes is correlated to madhumeha where all the three doshas(Vata, pitta, kapha) are in imbalance. It is a complete lifestyle change because what we see is a result of a long period of a faulty lifestyle. So it takes an equal amount of time to get it reversed.

Treatment in Ayurveda

Various treatments for diabetes in Ayurveda are as follows:

  • Control the diet. Take out refined carbohydrates and incorporate fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins and minerals along with unrefined carbohydrates.
  • Becoming obese due to diabetes can be reduced by doing exercise.
  • Incorporating certain spices into the diet like turmeric, fenugreek, and cinnamon fights insulin resistance from the body.
  • The detoxification programme of Ayurveda called panchakarma treatment is suggested when the toxic buildup is too high.
