Udwarthanam- A weight loss journey through Ayurveda

Tired of rigorous workouts and unhealthy eating habits? Are you tired and looking for a natural way to lose weight? If so, consider Udwarthanam, a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that involves dry massage with herbal powders. In this blog, Udwarthanam- A weight loss journey through Ayurveda, we will discuss the benefits of Ayurvedic therapy and debunk some of the misconceptions about the weight loss journey with the professionals at Ayurheritage, the top Ayurvedic center in Dubai

What is Udwarthanam?

Udwarthanam is one of the five types of Ayurvedic massages, also known as Panchakarma. The therapy is known to stimulate the lymphatic system, remove toxins, increase blood circulation, reduce cellulite, and tone the skin and muscles in our body It also helps to balance the doshas (the three energies that govern the body and mind) and enhance the metabolism.

Udwarthanam is mainly performed by applying a thin layer of herbal powder on the body and then rubbing it vigorously in a specific direction. The powder is made of certain herbs with detoxifying properties. It includes herbs such as Triphala, mustard, ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon. The massage can usually last from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the individual's condition and needs.

The benefits of Udwarthanam are many. It helps you to;

  • Lose weight by burning excess fat and calories
  • Improve digestion and eliminate constipation
  • Reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels
  • Prevent obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart problems
  • Boost immunity and prevent infections
  • Relieve stress and anxiety
  • Improve mood and mental clarity
  • Increase energy and vitality
  • Rejuvenate the skin and prevent aging signs
  • Enhance the beauty and glow of the complexion

Udwarthanam and Doshas

Udwarthanam is mainly suitable for people who have a kapha-predominant dosha or who suffer from kapha-related disorders such as obesity, lethargy, sluggishness, water retention, edema, and joint pain.  It is also beneficial for people who have a vata-predominant constitution or who suffer from vata-related disorders such as dryness, roughness, cracking, stiffness, and coldness.

However, Udwarthanam is not recommended for people who have a pitta-predominant constitution or who suffer from pitta-related disorders such as inflammation, burning, acidity, ulcers, rashes, and bleeding. It is also contraindicated for people who have sensitive skin, wounds, cuts, bruises, infections, or allergies. Pregnant women, children, elderly people, and people with chronic diseases should consult their doctor before undergoing Udwarthanam.

Udwarthanam is best done under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner who can customize the treatment according to your body type, health condition, and goals. You also need to follow a specific diet and lifestyle regimen before and after the therapy. Debunking Weight Loss Myth

However, before you decide to try Udwarthanam or any other weight loss therapy, you need to be aware of some common myths and misconceptions about weight loss that may hinder your progress and harm your health. In this blog, Udwarthanam- A weight loss journey through Ayurveda we will debunk three of the most prevalent weight loss myths and explain why they are not true.

Myth 1: You can lose weight by starving yourself or following a very low-calorie diet.

Fact: Starving yourself or following a very low-calorie diet may seem like a quick and easy way to lose weight, but it is actually very counterproductive and dangerous. When you deprive your body of the calories and nutrients it needs, you are not only losing fat but also muscle, water, and bone mass. This can lower your metabolism, weaken your immune system, cause hormonal imbalances, and increase your risk of various diseases. Moreover, when you resume eating normally after a period of starvation or restriction, your body will tend to store more fat as a survival mechanism, leading to weight gain and yo-yo dieting.

The Ayurvedic way of losing weight is not by starving yourself but by eating according to your body type (dosha), digestive capacity (agni), and season. You should eat foods that are wholesome, natural, fresh, and suitable for your constitution. You should also eat in moderation, avoid overeating or skipping meals, and follow a regular eating schedule.

Myth 2: You can lose weight by eliminating certain food groups or following a fad diet.

Fact: Eliminating certain food groups or following a fad diet may seem like an effective way to lose weight, but it is actually very unsustainable and unhealthy. When you cut out entire food groups or follow a diet that is based on gimmicks or trends, you are not only missing out on the essential nutrients that your body needs but also creating imbalances in your system. This can lead to cravings, binge eating, nutrient deficiencies, mood swings, fatigue, and other health problems. Moreover, when you stop following the diet or reintroduce the eliminated foods, you will likely regain the weight you lost and more.

The Ayurvedic way of losing weight is not by eliminating certain food groups or following a fad diet but by eating a balanced and varied diet that includes all six tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent). You should eat foods that are compatible with your body type (dosha), digestive capacity (agni), and season. You should also eat foods that are prepared with love, care, and attention.

Myth 3: You can lose weight by exercising excessively or using weight loss pills or supplements.

Fact: It’s completely wrong. Exercising excessively or using weight loss pills or supplements may seem like a convenient way to lose weight, but it is actually very harmful and ineffective. When you exercise excessively or use weight loss pills or supplements, you are not only putting stress on your body but also ignoring the root causes of your weight gain. This can lead to injuries, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, addiction, dependency, side effects, and rebound weight gain. Moreover, when you stop exercising excessively or using weight loss pills or supplements, you will likely lose the motivation and discipline to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
